Which Is The Safest Heating Option?
Hands down, the safest heating option for your home is a heat pump.
Some heating sources have flames or hot surfaces to contend with. Obviously, these are not ideal when you have young children and pets around the house. They could easily burn themselves without realising it.
Plus, open flames are always a danger around curtains, tissues, or other fabrics.
However, a heat pump has none of that danger. With the unit situated high on the wall, well out of reach, there is no danger of your kids or pets accidentally bumping into it. Plus, your heat pump can even run safely when you aren’t home or while you are sleeping.
The Dangers Of Other Heating Sources
Some heating sources are downright dangerous. Here is a rundown on what to be mindful of:
Portable Gas Heaters: These are the worst of the lot. Not only do they have an open flame and are hot to the touch, but they let off large levels of carbon monoxide. Breathing in high levels of the gas can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
Powered Heaters: Again, these are very hot to the touch. They are also very power-hungry, so are a danger to your power bill! On top of that, they can be a fire risk. For example, if you accidentally cover the vents of an oil fin heater (popular for draping clothes over, or if a curtain blows over the area), then it can spark a fire in your home.
Fan Heaters: Again, these devices are hot to touch. Because they are small, it is tempting to pick them up to move them, running the risk of a burn. As the heater is powered by a fan, it has a habit of collecting dust on its blades. This can be a huge fire risk, as a build-up of dust can cause the unit to overload and spark. They can also be easily knocked over, causing another fire hazard.
The Healthiest Heating Option
We have just learned that some heating options are dangerous for your health. Especially unflued gas heaters. So, what is the healthiest heating option?
Again, the heat pump wins hands down.
New Zealand homes can be notoriously damp and cold. Damp homes are not healthy homes. Instead, they can be filled with mould, bacteria, and pollutants that are bad for your health.
Fortunately, a heat pump can help to combat that. When you use your heat pump for heating, it can prevent condensation from forming on windows. It does this by circulating warm air around the room, just like demisting the windscreen in your car. Less condensation means less moisture and less chance for damp and mould.
